The "tungsten radiation shielding fabric," processed into a smooth fiber form using Toho Metal's technology and woven with the cooperation of a fiber manufacturer, possesses shielding capabilities equivalent to existing shielding materials, while being lightweight and highly flexible. Tungsten radiation shielding fabric has successfully been commercialized as a 100% tungsten fabric by using tungsten in a fibrous form. Additionally, the shielding effect has shown an average shielding rate of over 20% (note) by layering 10 sheets of fabric and stacking four 0.1mm tungsten plates. It is entirely possible to further increase the shielding rate by changing the number of layers and limiting the areas to be shielded. Furthermore, it can be finished in a fabric form, and we are currently considering its installation inside helmets, although it can also be applied to other objects. It is effective not only against gamma rays but also against X-rays, so there is potential for expansion into medical applications that comply with lead-free regulations. (Note) The shielding rate was measured at the Cobalt-60 gamma ray irradiation facility at Nagoya University, and the shielding rate may vary depending on the measurement location and usage conditions, so this result is not guaranteed. Toho Metal's "Thermoalloy" is a cermet material primarily composed of the metals molybdenum and high-purity zirconia. Molybdenum has an extremely high melting point of 2620°C and possesses excellent high-temperature strength as a metal material, while zirconia is an oxide that has excellent corrosion resistance against molten slag and molten metal.
