The transportation of glass in the manufacturing process of LCD televisions is mainly done by robots, but there are some processes that are performed manually. As the glass has become larger and thinner, manual transportation of glass has become difficult. Additionally, the piping to the vacuum pump, unlike the work done by robots, is significantly hindered by manual work performed by humans. The suction tools are designed to solve such issues and are widely used for the manual loading and unloading of glass into and from LCD manufacturing equipment. The manufacturers that have adopted these tools are major LCD television manufacturers across the country, including Sharp (Kameyama, Sakai, Yaita), IBM (Yasu), Sony (Tagajo, Ichinomiya), Toshiba (Fukaya), and Panasonic (Himeji). In just four years since its launch, we have achieved cumulative sales of 600 units. The principle is simple, and at exhibitions, we are often asked by the general public what is new about it. However, for those involved in production technology, it is a fresh and surprising product. It is often said that it is "an eye-opener" and "something that seems like it should exist but didn't."

Vacuum pads are an indispensable presence in factory automation and labor-saving. Recently, with the miniaturization of products, the workpieces being handled have become smaller, leading to an increased demand for smaller diameter vacuum pads. Vacuum pads, flat type, are available from φ1mm, and vacuum pads, bellows type, are available from φ4mm.

As shown in the photo, the workpiece (photo: mouse gray) can be suction transported even if it has a washer shape and a large hole. Additionally, it is suitable for suctioning thin materials such as films due to its flat suction surface. Porous plastic has the following advantages compared to traditional metal or ceramic porous materials: ○ It can be produced at a low cost, making it easy to manufacture large pads. ○ Being made of plastic, it is less likely to damage the workpiece.

Conveying technology for the transfer of work between processing operations is an essential technology for automation. As the semiconductor manufacturing process and liquid crystal manufacturing process become larger and more refined, there is a growing demand for cleaner and finer adsorption conveying technologies. Non-contact conveying technology utilizes Bernoulli's principle. When a fluid is introduced into a narrowed flow path, the flow velocity increases and the pressure decreases according to Bernoulli's principle. This pressure drop is used to transport the workpiece. Non-contact conveying technology is a method of transporting without making contact with the workpiece, preventing contamination and making it an ideal conveying technology.

As the processes of fine-tuning and cleaning advance, the issues of "suction marks" and "sticking" from suction cups have become problematic. Ohtani Giken, a manufacturer of suction cups, has developed a surface modification pad as a countermeasure against "suction marks" and "sticking." The surface modification pad epoxy-coats the surface of the suction cup. The modified layer (epoxy layer) is approximately 50μm thick from the surface and possesses characteristics such as "improved slip," "barrier effect," and "non-stick properties." While maintaining the overall rubber characteristics, including elasticity, the surface is modified to solve issues related to surface entanglement.

◎ It is ideal for manual transport of LCD glass. ◎ It offers good workability without external wiring or piping. ◎ A vacuum source (vacuum pump, ejector) is not required. This suction tool was developed at the request of LCD manufacturers. It has been widely adopted for transporting LCD glass to LCD manufacturing equipment by hand. This suction tool can transport LCD glass without the need for a vacuum source (vacuum pump, ejector), similar to a household suction cup. The principle is simple. By closing the valve, the trapped air expands, creating negative pressure that allows for suction.

At Otani Giken, we also accept the design and manufacturing of various suction fixtures, suction devices, and robot hands tailored to our customers' specifications. The example in the photo is a large suction device for transporting glass plates weighing 250 kg. It measures approximately 1000 x 1000 mm and is equipped with eight suction cups of Φ150. It is lifted using a central eye bolt. During operation, safety measures are in place to maintain a vacuum for a certain period of time even if the vacuum pump fails.
