In 1968, Temple University Skin and Cancer Hospital obtained hairless mice from Sandra Biological Supply and created Skh:HR by crossing them with CBA mice. This strain exhibited various coat colors. In 1987, Hoshino Laboratory Animal Breeding Co., Ltd. selected only the albino mice from the Skh:HR that were maintained in a closed colony and further produced and supplied them as Hos:HR-1 after SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) treatment.

This is a model animal established through selective breeding from Long-Evans rats purchased from Charles River Canada in 1982. It develops diabetes with obesity and diabetic complications, particularly nephropathy. It was previously sold exclusively to academic institutions (universities and non-profit organizations) through Japan SLC, Inc. and its distributors, but general sales began on January 1, 2017.
