Currently, lignin is attracting attention as a powerful biomaterial, but in the past, it was only used for limited applications. Bolegard is a company that has consistently produced lignin since its early days. One of the applications that supported that early period was lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries were invented in 1859 by the Frenchman Gaston Planté. The current basic structure consists of lead dioxide as the positive electrode, sponge lead as the negative electrode, and dilute sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. Until the first few decades of the 20th century, the containers for battery cells were made of wood. However, with improvements that changed the containers to plastic, a problem arose where the cycle life became shorter. Upon investigating the cause, it was found that lignin was what supported the cycle life of lead-acid batteries. It was discovered that the polymer structure of lignin has excellent functions in inhibiting or dispersing the crystallization of inorganic compounds due to steric hindrance. Subsequently, Bolegard followed a business path of developing lignin-based dispersants suitable for various applications. We are introducing various new uses for lignin. Lignin sulfonate salts are non-toxic, persistent, and less likely to be regulated (such as under REACH or EPA), which is why they are used in many products. For example, they are used as fluidizers in concrete products, as crystal growth inhibitors in lead-acid batteries, as dispersants and colloidal stabilizers in dyes, and as binders in animal feed. Here, we will highlight the important functions of these substances in pesticide formulations, such as binding, dispersion, complexation, and crystal growth inhibition. A common feature of these functions is that lignin sulfonate salts exert these effects by adsorbing at interfaces. The tests were conducted at ambient temperature and pH 6.8 +/- 0.3, using various formulations of corrosion inhibitors. Pionera biopolymer helps in the decomposition and dispersion of biofilms. Laboratory work was conducted using Staphylococcus simulans strains isolated from a meat processing plant after cleaning. Bacterial cultures were grown overnight at 30°C in tryptone soy broth (TSB). Adhesion to steel was measured by both surface coverage (microscopic examination) and colony-forming units, with colony-forming units determined by removing bacteria from coupons using ultrasonic treatment and plate spreading. The gypsum scale dynamic flow test evaluates the scale amount both by weight and optically, using 1.2 times the saturated solubility of calcium sulfate, 10 ppm of polymer inhibitor, an 8-hour scale time, and a temperature gradient with copper pipes.
