Electropolishing is a process that dissolves the surface of a metal by a few microns electrochemically, using the object as the anode in a phosphate-based solution. As the surface is dissolved during the polishing process, contaminants on the surface are removed, resulting in a very clean surface. Additionally, there is no processing alteration layer caused by mechanical polishing such as buffing, and a surface with the same properties as the deep layers of the metal is obtained.

When surface treatment such as anodizing is performed on aluminum vacuum device parts, the amount of gas released increases because the film is porous. Since the electrolytic polishing treatment of aluminum forms a relatively dense film, it can suppress the increase in gas release.
