When applying low-frequency (5-27 Hz) alternating current excitation to the test specimen (carbon steel), magnetic flux leakage occurs due to defects. This leakage is picked up by a coil sensor, and by mainly detecting changes in phase information, an output signal proportional to the volume of the defect can be obtained. Since the Falcon has a small coil spacing of about 6 mm, it can capture the profile of the defect, allowing for the determination of the defect's depth when normalized by area.
