Terahertz Communication Research - Latest Research Results and Useful Components

Wireless communication links are being driven by increasing data rates, aiming for higher bandwidth. Current communication methods, such as Bluetooth and wireless LAN, utilize bandwidths ranging from several MHz to several GHz. However, it has already been predicted that these frequency bands will not be sufficient in the long term, as transfer speeds of several tens to hundreds of gigabits per second are required. Higher carrier frequencies are necessary for faster data transfer, and research is currently being conducted on the use of communication systems in the "terahertz" (THz) frequency range, which far exceeds carrier frequencies of 100 GHz. This application note summarizes recent achievements in terahertz communication research and introduces systems and components that have proven beneficial in this field.
