The Extreme Environment Robot Research Institute (HERO Lab) is an organization aimed at the research and development of decommissioning robots that can operate in environments where humans cannot enter, such as the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Founded in 2020, it is led by Professor Shigeo Hirose, an honorary professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology and the first recipient of the Pioneer in Robotics and Automation Award from the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society, under the auspices of the Hakusan Industrial Group of Tokyo Electric Power Company.
