Is it okay to apply paste to expanded graphite now that it's too late to ask!? [JM Seal Magazine] (Issue 22) June 22

"Is it okay to apply paste to expanded graphite?"
To get straight to the point, the answer is "In principle, it is better not to apply it."
The reason people on site use paste is that it makes leaks less likely, but since it has been applied in the past, I think there is a sense of discomfort with not applying it.
Therefore, I would like to explain the reason for "In principle, it is better not to apply it."
Most pastes contain oils, and when applied, they soften the gasket and improve its adaptability, thus enhancing sealing performance, but they also reduce the strength of the gasket.
Expanded graphite has internal voids, so it absorbs a lot of paste (oil), which significantly decreases its strength.
There is a higher risk of breakage when tightened, which is why we respond with "In principle, it is better not to apply it."
It is not absolutely forbidden to apply it, but prior confirmation is important.
