The gas is humidified in the vapor phase through the walls of the NAFION® tube, preventing the formation of water droplets in the humidified gas. The driving force required for this process is solely the vapor pressure difference between the inside and outside of the tube wall. Water molecules first permeate the surface of the tube, then move through the tube wall and rapidly evaporate on the gas flow side. Only water molecules pass through the tube wall, and due to the non-porous nature and strong acidity of the NAFION® tube, bacteria and contamination do not mix with the gas flow, allowing for clean and safe humidification. !!
