An optical flat refers to a parallel plane substrate that has been precisely polished on the surface of glass material. It is also used as a high-precision flat window material for lasers, but is typically used as an ideal plane (reference plane) for comparative reference against an unknown polished surface in terms of flatness (surface accuracy).
