The scratch test is a method for evaluating the adhesion of a film by closely attaching a diamond indenter to a sample fixed on a table, gradually applying a load, and simultaneously moving the table at a constant speed. Changes such as cracks, chipping, and delamination occur in the thin film due to the vertical load (Fn) and the frictional force (Ft) generated by the table movement. The deformation point of the scratch mark is determined through observation with an optical microscope, and the vertical load at that point is considered the critical load for comparison between samples. In addition to evaluating the adhesion of thin films, it is also used to assess the susceptibility of surfaces such as bulk materials and resins to scratching.
