Traditionally, the assessment of the danger level of burrs was done sensually by human fingers, but this has been designed to allow for a more objective evaluation. The sharp edge tester developed by TES Corporation is featured in photographs according to the UL1439 standard and serves as a standard for objectively determining the safety of sharp edges, being widely used. The tape kit used as the assessment standard is easy to attach and detach, allowing for quick and accurate testing. The test involves attaching the tape kit to the tip of the sharp edge tester's arm and making contact with the burr or edge over a distance of 101.6 mm while applying a tension of 6.7 N for 2 to 5 seconds. According to UL standards, if the two outer layers of the three-layer tape are cut and the third layer, which is black, is visible, the burr or edge is deemed dangerous and fails the test. If the contact distance is less than 50.8 mm one way, a total of 101.6 mm of contact must be made in one round trip or more.
