The emergency earthquake alert system is designed to quickly inform people of the estimated arrival time and intensity of an earthquake based on observation data captured by seismometers close to the epicenter immediately after an earthquake occurs. Earthquakes are preceded by small tremors known as P-waves, followed by larger tremors called S-waves. The emergency earthquake alert system detects these P-waves, predicts the scale and epicenter of the earthquake, and issues alerts a few seconds to tens of seconds before the larger S-waves arrive. The Japan Meteorological Agency issues alerts when an intensity of 5 weak or higher is predicted. However, there are cases where information may not reach those close to the epicenter in time, and there are technical limitations, such as a margin of error of about plus or minus one in the predicted intensity.
