The flexible CIGS solar cell market is beginning to take off as a flexible solar cell. The flexible solar cell market was initially established with amorphous silicon solar cells, which are of the thin-film Si type. However, due to the price collapse caused by the overproduction of crystalline silicon solar cells, the price competitiveness of thin-film Si solar cells has declined, leading to a contraction of the market. CIGS solar cells are gaining traction in the flexible solar cell market as a replacement for thin-film Si. CIGS achieves higher conversion efficiency than thin-film Si while also maintaining strong price competitiveness as a thin-film solar cell. It is a cost-effective solar cell. The market for flexible CIGS is starting to gain momentum and is becoming a key player in the flexible solar cell sector. Development of organic solar cells has also become active as the next type after CIGS. Some manufacturers are already in mass production, while many others are advancing their development towards mass production. The conversion efficiency has also improved significantly, reaching 11-12% on a cell basis. For full-scale mass production, further improvements in conversion efficiency and reductions in module costs are necessary, but it is predicted that full-scale mass production will begin around 2015.
