Ultraviolet light is generated using mercury vapor discharge, and the energy emitted from the discharge tube is radiated as heat. This heat can cause thermal damage to the irradiated materials. Therefore, it is necessary to remove this unwanted heat when irradiating materials that are sensitive to thermal damage (such as films, cardboard, plastics, and ABS resin products). The cold mirror/filter method, when cross-sectioned, appears as shown in the right diagram. It uses a highly efficient cold mirror to absorb infrared radiation, and a cold filter to reflect light in the long-wavelength region, successfully extracting "cool ultraviolet light" from below the filter.
