**What is Phytoncide?** The name phytoncide comes from Russian, where "phyton" means "plant" and "cide" means "having the ability to kill other organisms." When combined, it means "the volatile components released by plants have antibacterial effects." Phytoncides are produced and emitted by plants, which cannot move freely, to protect themselves from external threats such as pests.
