The 60,000-year secret of the indigenous people of Papua, Indonesia: the red fruit buamera.
The indigenous people of Papua Island, Indonesia, arrived on the island from Africa 60,000 years ago. The tribes that migrated to the 2,000-meter highlands lived nearly naked in the cold and subsisted on plant-based foods, but the secret to their prosperity was the rare plant found only in Papua Island, the red fruit Bua Mera. The oil contained in the flesh is rich in provitamin A and vitamin E, and the fatty acid composition of the oil is similar to that of human fat. The most notable feature of provitamin A is its abundant content of β-cryptoxanthin, which has garnered global attention. Additionally, three other types of carotenoids were revealed for the first time through collaborative research with Nagasaki University’s Faculty of Pharmacy. Due to the rarity of the plant, the Indonesian government has entered into a material transfer agreement based on the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. The extraction and production of the oil, as well as research and development, are based on agreements with the Indonesian government and the Papua provincial government. The EU is preparing for new substance registration, and the patent examination for Bua Mera oil production is underway. Acute toxicity, subacute toxicity tests, and mutagenicity tests have all proven to be safe. Animal tests have confirmed its effectiveness against human lung cancer and stomach cancer. It also has a unique mechanism for suppressing melanin production. Preliminary clinical trials have shown effectiveness for acne and hair growth.

Applications/Examples of results
As a health food, it can be applied as a sauce or ketchup with added Bua Mela oil. It can also be used in school lunches for children who particularly need carotenoids. By filling it into soft capsules, the oxidation and decomposition of carotenoids can be suppressed, thus demonstrating its effectiveness as a nutritional functional food by enhancing the addition of vitamins like vitamin E. Since it is registered as a cosmetic, it can be applied to cosmetics that utilize the natural pigments and antioxidant properties of carotenoids.
