Managing the surface roughness of a vessel significantly affects its operating costs. Corrosion, pitting, warping of steel plates, mechanical damage, and biofouling all lead to a substantial deterioration in surface roughness. Proper maintenance of the propeller and timely repainting with antifouling and fouling prevention coatings reduce hydrodynamic resistance, contributing not only to fuel efficiency but also to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
