basic information
Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), also known as acrylic, acrylic glass, or Plexiglas (brand name), is a frequently used glass substitute material due to its high transparency, low cost, and ease of machining. The monomer of polymethyl methacrylate is methyl methacrylate (MMA, acrylic monomer). PMMA currently has the highest light transmittance of 92%, surpassing glass, making it an excellent polymer transparent material. Acrylic possesses excellent weather resistance and aging resistance, outstanding chemical resistance, acid and alkali resistance, oil resistance, excellent colorability, and high gloss. Due to its high viscosity from significant branching, polymethyl methacrylate has a slow processing speed in hot processing, and Plexiglas can be cut not only with a lathe but also with a drill, and can be processed using acetone. Chloroform and other materials bonded in various shapes can also be processed into plastic skins for applications ranging from small cockpit covers to dentures and trays, using methods such as blow molding, injection, and extrusion.
