Analysis of Demand for Flexible Display Market Applications

Market and application outlook as mass production becomes full-scale.

In the fourth quarter of 2014, mass production of flexible OLEDs finally began in earnest. As we entered the fourth quarter, the production volume of flexible displays, particularly flexible OLEDs, surged rapidly. Samsung adopted flexible OLEDs for its popular smartphone, the GALAXY NOTE edge. While the initial model, the GALAXY Round, had a more experimental feel, this model is now being sold in earnest, and production volume is expanding. LG Display (LGD) started supplying flexible OLEDs for smartwatches, initially for LG Electronics, and production for Apple began in the fourth quarter. The production volume for Apple is expected to be more than an order of magnitude higher than before. As a result, LGD's production of flexible OLEDs is showing rapid expansion. The production of flexible displays has become more established. This is expected to lead to improvements in mass production technology and infrastructure, resulting in increased production efficiency and yield, thereby driving down costs.
