■SAM (Saturated Absorption Mirror) consists of a mirror and a saturated absorber in front of it. ■The single crystal layers of the mirror and the absorber are grown on a GaAs wafer. ■It is a nonlinear mirror, and the reflectivity increases with the increase in pulse energy. ■A self-starting passive mode-locked diode pump laser with a very stable pulse repetition rate has been realized. ■It is prepared for solid lasers and fiber lasers in a wide spectral range from 800 nm to 3 µm. ■Using SAM as a nonlinear optical element, Q-switched microchip lasers can also be realized.
