The "Varestraint Test" is one of the tests used to investigate the susceptibility to welding cracks that occur at high temperatures. This test involves applying instantaneous bending deformation to a test plate that is molten with a TIG welding torch, forcing high-temperature cracks to occur in the molten bead. It allows for the evaluation of solidification cracks and liquefaction cracks due to re-heating separately. It is used for comparing the crack resistance of welding materials and selecting welding conditions, and by changing the bending radius of the jig (strain amount) or measuring the crack temperature range of the test piece, cracks can be quantitatively evaluated.
