It dissolves easily in water (82.8 g/100 g), and the freezing point of the solution decreases (freezing point depression). This property is utilized by using a saturated solution as a refrigerant for skating rinks. In Japan, during late autumn, containers filled with calcium chloride are placed in various locations on roads (mainly bridges, steep slopes, and sharp curves) in preparation for snowfall. This allows passersby to voluntarily spread it to prevent the road surface from becoming dangerous due to snow accumulation or freezing. The appropriate amount to use depends on the road conditions, but it is about 30g (a handful) to 100 grams per square meter, and care must be taken not to overapply it.
