The surface of a DOE has a complex microstructure for its optical functions. There are types that are etched into silica or glass, or embossed into polymers. A DOE can achieve optical functions similar to those of lenses, prisms, or aspheric refractive optical elements, but one advantage is that a DOE can be made very compact and lightweight. Additionally, DOEs are not limited to laser applications; some LEDs or other light sources can also be modulated.

Plastic Standard DOE Holoeye Photonics offers cost-effective standard DOEs. The materials used are plastic materials such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polycarbonate (PC). The standard products have a diameter of 8mm and a thickness of 1mm-1.2mm, with a 12.7mm mount also available.
