Corrosion is a phenomenon in which materials undergo chemical reactions with their surrounding environment, resulting in alteration, wear, and destruction, leading to a loss of their original function. **Features** ● Metal Corrosion Analysis The necessary conditions for metal rust formation are water and oxygen. Halogens and sulfides are factors that destroy the surface oxide film and promote rust. Elements derived from these rusts can be analyzed from the surface and cross-section using SEM-EDX, ED-XRF, and EPMA. ● Rust Identification Analysis Iron rust (iron oxide) mainly consists of red rust (Fe2O3) and black rust (Fe3O4). Black rust is an oxide film that forms on the surface of iron, intentionally created to suppress the formation of red rust. Red rust corrodes the iron itself. The difference between the two cannot be determined by EDX analysis, but they can be distinguished through XRD analysis. ● Additive Component Analysis of Resins and Rubbers Additives in resins and rubbers change due to heat, light, and other factors, leading to degradation and loss of properties. The additive components of new and degraded products can be compared and analyzed using SEM-EDX, ED-XRF, FT-IR, and other methods. ● Investigation, Prevention, and Mitigation of Rust Causes When rust occurs in steel and non-ferrous materials, the presence of Cl or S in the water, cleaning solutions, or cutting oils used in the manufacturing process may be the cause. IC can be utilized for such analyses.
