ELV is a directive from the European Union that regulates the levels of four substances in automobiles, end-of-life vehicles, and their parts and materials: lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). RoHS is a directive from the European Union that restricts the use of six substances in electrical and electronic equipment: lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). (Note: Four new types of phthalate esters have been added.) RoHS screening analysis allows for the rapid screening of substances regulated by the RoHS/ELV directives (Pb, Hg, Cd, total Cr, total Br) and chlorine in resins.
