Detailed information
-
As a measure to enhance the fault tolerance of a system, there is a method of clustering systems that connects multiple hardware to achieve redundancy and improve availability. While it may seem that preparing two inexpensive standalone servers could reduce costs, there are actually several points to be cautious about with the cluster method: 1. What are the differences in initial costs? 2. What are the business impacts and recovery methods in the event of a failure? 3. What are the operational costs of the system? 4. What is the split-brain syndrome?
-
What are the differences in implementation costs? Building a cluster system involves many processes and increases the required man-hours. The ftServer is suitable for systems that require reliability and short delivery times. After implementation, the ftServer allows for easy management and operation.
-
■ What are the business impacts and recovery methods in the event of a failure? In a cluster system, when switching to a standby system during a failure, business operations will stop (failover). Generally, this results in a downtime of several tens of seconds to several minutes, during which services cannot be provided. In a cluster system, since the machines switch, the loss of memory and cache data can also be a significant issue.
-
■ What are the system operation costs? Clusters are usually complex to operate and can be costly. Not only do you need to maintain two servers, but if someone without cluster skills is operating them, you may encounter unexpected troubles. When switching to a standby system, it may also be necessary to fail back to the main system. Since operations continue indefinitely, the costs are generally higher than the initial system construction costs.
-
■ What is Split-Brain Syndrome? In cluster servers, a mechanism is commonly used to switch to a standby server when there is no response from the production server, monitored by heartbeat signals. The production and standby servers detect each other's operational status using Ethernet, but due to failures in network devices such as hubs, network lines, or LAN cards, or due to response timeouts caused by high load on the production server, the standby server may also mount the file system, leading to data corruption. This phenomenon is referred to as "Split-Brain Syndrome." However, it does not occur in Stratus's "Fault-Tolerant Server" (non-stop server).
