To improve the efficiency of the next-generation e-axle, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has developed the new HiSpin® seal.
The rapid spread of electric vehicles has begun, and it is said that by 2030, up to 40% of all vehicles will be electric. This requires the establishment of technology that can expand the driving range on a single charge. One of the focus areas in this regard is the improvement of e-axle technology efficiency. To enhance the efficiency of the next-generation e-axle, the technical staff at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has developed a new HiSpin® seal. basic information
The e-axle, a key technology in electric vehicles, is a unit that combines an electric motor and a gearbox, and various demands have been raised regarding seals: • The contrasting operating environments within the e-axle: Reliable sealing technology is required to combine the electric motor and gearbox within a single housing. This is because, while the electric motor requires a dry environment during operation, the gearbox needs sufficient lubrication. • Extremely high rotational speeds: Currently, electric transmissions operate at 15,000 to 16,000 RPM (4 to 8 times the speed of gasoline vehicles), and it is said that this will double in the future. • Limited lubrication conditions: Under operating environments with very little or no lubrication, seals are exposed to high friction and stick-slip, which can potentially cause wear and early failure, ultimately leading to reduced mileage. • Chemical resistance of seal materials: Various lubrication methods are used in electric drive systems. This requires seal materials to not only have resistance to the fluids used but also to function effectively.
