This process is conducted at a lower temperature (generally between 550 and 580°C) than the transformation point temperature (the austenite transformation temperature during quenching), resulting in extremely minimal deformation compared to carburizing or conventional quenching. Unlike the phenomenon of hardening through quenching, this treatment hardens by diffusing nitrogen into the surface and forming a layer of iron nitride compounds on the surface. (This differs from the form of hardening that utilizes the transformation of steel as in quenching.) Soft nitriding aims to improve fatigue strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. The finish appears gray to light gray (the color of the nitrided layer).
