The Pockels cell is used to change the polarization state of light passing through it when a voltage is applied to the electrodes of electro-optic crystals such as KD*P crystals. When used in combination with polarizers, the Pockels cell can function as a high-speed optical switch. Typical applications include Q-switching of laser resonators, damping of laser resonators, and coupling of light to and from regenerative amplifiers. KD*P crystal-based Pockels cells are routinely used for Q-switching applications in the wavelength range from 400 nm to about 1.1 μm. Commercial flash lamp-pumped Nd:YAG lasers and low-repetition-rate DPSS Nd:YAG lasers are equipped with KD*P crystal-based Pockels cells for laser cavity Q-switching.
