Wide wavelength range compatible Pockels cell
The BBO crystal-based Pockels cell is available for a wide wavelength range from UV to over 2 μm. The low electro-optic coefficient of BBO crystals results in high operating voltages. The λ/4 applied voltage is proportional to the ratio of the electrode spacing to the crystal length, so as a result, devices with smaller apertures have lower λ/4 applied voltages, but even a 2.5 mm aperture device can have an applied voltage of around 4 kV at 1064 nm. Pockels cells are used to change the polarization state of light passing through them when a voltage is applied to the electrodes of electro-optical crystals, such as BBO crystals. When used in combination with polarizers, Pockels cells can function as high-speed optical switches. Typical applications include Q-switching of laser resonators, damping of laser resonators, and coupling of light to and from regenerative amplifiers. Low-pressure electric ringing makes the control of high-power and high-repetition-rate pulsed lasers using these Pockels cells attractive. High-speed switching electronic drivers that are suitably matched to Pockels cells are also available for Q-switching, cavity damping, and other applications.
