This document is a research report from SiC Tools LLC, which has successfully developed SiC single crystal tools that achieve sharpness (edge rounding) comparable to diamond single crystal tools and minimize the machining distortion imparted to the workpiece. In this research, we clarified the relationship between chemical reactivity and cutting processes, which is impossible to achieve with diamond, which has a negative electron affinity, or with cemented carbide tools that have grain boundaries. Furthermore, to realize ultra-precision machining on the nanometer order utilizing that state, we quantitatively clarified the surface electronic states of SiC single crystals and their chemical reactivity with the workpiece.
