SEM is the only method that can accurately measure the entire range of powders used in additive manufacturing. Laser diffraction can measure spherical particles in the small particle size range (when used as DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) and SLM (Selective Laser Melting) printers), but when using EBM (Electron Beam Melting) equipment, there is a possibility that larger particles may be misclassified. Conversely, image analysis is suitable for measuring larger particles but cannot measure smaller ones. Phenom ParticleX AM can accommodate all size ranges of powders used in metal additive manufacturing from 200 nm to several mm.
