Near-infrared spectrometer Technical Data 16 Petroleum Gasoline Fuel Pyrolysis Gasoline Pyrolysis gasoline (Pygas) is a byproduct of ethylene production and is unsuitable as a motor fuel due to the presence of undesirable conjugated diolefins. To eliminate this drawback, it is necessary to reduce the olefin content to below 2 mg/g using a Selective Hydrogenation Unit (SHU). The diene value (or Maleic Anhydride Value (MAV)) is typically determined by wet chemical analysis through the Diels-Alder reaction (UOP326-17). This wet chemical analysis method requires trained analysts to perform it over several hours. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) contrasts with this chemical analysis method and can be applied as a cost-effective, high-speed analytical technique to determine the diene value in pyrolysis gasoline.
