Tension springs exert a force that tries to keep the coils in contact with each other even when unloaded, and this force is referred to as "initial tension." No deflection occurs until the load reaches the magnitude of the initial tension. When a force greater than the strength of this initial tension is applied, the contacting coil sections begin to open up. In general, when using hard steel wire as a standard, the initial tension for stainless steel wire is appropriately set to be 10-15% lower, while for phosphor bronze, brass wire, and nickel silver wire, it is set to be 50% lower.
