The spring index (D/d) is the value of the coil's average diameter divided by the wire diameter. While there are other factors that affect ease of manufacturing, it is generally considered that this value should be between 4 and 20, with 7 to 13 being particularly suitable for spring production. Although a spring index of 4 to 20 is desirable, it is not an absolute requirement to stay within this range. However, producing springs outside of this range can be very difficult or even impossible, so it is advisable to keep it within this range as much as possible.
