The free height (free length) is the height (length) of the spring when no load is applied in the case of a compression spring. In the case of a tension spring, the free length is the inner dimension between one hook and the other hook. When measuring the free length of a tension spring, measure the inner dimension directly between the hooks. If it is difficult to measure the inner dimension, measure the outer dimension between the hooks and subtract (wire diameter × 2) from that value.
