A tension spring, also known as a "pull spring," is a type of spring that bears tensile loads and is a representative of wire springs. The hooks of tension springs come in various shapes, with reverse round hooks and U-hooks being the most commonly selected. Each hook shape of a tension spring has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the design is carried out considering processing costs (difficulty) and hook strength. Tension springs are used in a variety of applications, from large ones like the tension springs attached to stairways used at airports to smaller ones used in relay switches. In everyday life, tension springs are manufactured for applications such as those attached to salon chairs and for motorcycle stands. Unlike compression coil springs, tension springs have an initial tension. Initial tension is the force created when the wire material twists in the direction of contact during coiling formation. The initial tension of a tension spring is a unique phenomenon that occurs when coiling is done through cold forming. Depending on the coiling method, the initial tension can be made stronger or weaker. However, to achieve zero initial tension, it is necessary to coil with a slight pitch, similar to compression coil springs.
