[Case Study: Food Industry] Improvement of Functionality of Old Equipment - Food Machinery/Food Related
Temperature control device for food processing manufacturers.
This is the request from the food processing manufacturer. How about digitizing the on-site forms in light of the mandatory application of HACCP starting in June 2021?
Our company is engaged in a business that solves on-site problems. The current content began with a consultation about these issues. With the enforcement of the HACCP application requirement in June 2021, it has become mandatory to retain on-site data, and they wanted to implement measures and sought our assistance. Since we ourselves were not in the food processing industry, we held meetings to understand what kind of support would be beneficial. The issues that arose were as follows: - The current handwritten forms lack reliability. - The equipment from which data needs to be collected is very old and lacks data collection functionality. To address these issues, we contacted manufacturers of food equipment, but it appeared that the manufacturer in question was no longer in business. Therefore, we decided to create retrofitted equipment to enhance the functionality of the existing system. The purpose of this initiative was to accumulate data on the processing temperatures of equipment used for sterilization. The steps we took included: Listening to the customer's concerns ⇒ Proposing countermeasures ⇒ Designing ⇒ Installation and adjustment.

basic information
The request from the food processing manufacturer this time was to "definitely collect processing temperature data," so I focused on designing equipment specifically for this function. In order to accumulate data, it was necessary to measure the temperature. However, while the current equipment had a mechanical temperature adjustment feature, it was unable to measure temperature and output data. Therefore, I started by adding a function to the food processing equipment to enable temperature measurement. To allow for temperature measurement in the food processing equipment, I added a thermocouple. Next, regarding the data acquisition from the thermocouple, I found out that CHINO's data logger could be used, so instead of designing an original solution, I decided to install the data logger. At this stage, it was important to make the use of this function as simple as possible on-site, so I designed it with a hard switch that could be pressed, and I also created a procedure video to provide guidance.

I will state the price as a result of this introduction. The handover was completed for 1.3 million yen from design to implementation.

Applications/Examples of results
At Yamagishi Manufacturing, we are conducting a project to listen to the challenges faced on-site. The content this time was about the issues faced by food processing manufacturers. I was not aware, but it seems that HACCP has been made mandatory in the food industry since June 2021, and they were under pressure to comply. I have heard that there are many cases where food machinery manufacturers are no longer available, as in this instance. If that happens, it becomes impossible to improve functionality, so if you could consult with us even just for advice, we might be able to help you in some way. Please feel free to reach out!

-
Here is the photo of the exterior. This is something that was added to the food machine as an aftermarket installation.
-
This is the operation panel of the measuring device. The top part is the recorder, and the operation is performed using the touch panel below. However, based on feedback from the field, it was preferred to have switches, so switches have also been installed.

This is a thermocouple that was added later. Installing it was very challenging.
