Visit the manufacturer of Japan's plaster and introduce the manufacturing process that has inherited timeless techniques and wisdom.
Lime, glue, and straw are 100% natural materials that have been cultivated through unique techniques since the Edo period, resulting in plaster. The unchanging method of making plaster and the evolving ideas surrounding it. Utilizing the techniques and culture passed down to the present, the MYKE brand's "JAPAN Plaster" is a custom product tailored to modern architecture. We spoke with a manufacturing company in Tochigi Prefecture responsible for production about the research involved from limestone mining to manufacturing. In the first part, we will introduce the process from mining to burning lime in a kiln. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー Japan Plaster comes from one of the highest quality limestone strata in Japan, formed from the accumulation of corals and other materials in the ocean approximately 250 million years ago. The production of plaster that takes advantage of the characteristics of the land began long ago. It is said that during the founding period, plaster for construction was often sold to Edo. Japanese plaster, which is believed to have been established during the Asuka period, is beautifully white, excels in fire and moisture resistance, and durability, making it widely used in shrines, temples, and castles. Today, it is a representative building material of Japan, used in major structures such as Tokyo Station.

Detailed information
-
One of the raw materials for plaster, limestone is said to be the only natural resource that can be self-supplied in Japan. Here, limestone is mined from our own quarry. The mining operation is the foundation of lime production, and shipping high-quality lime leads to the manufacture of high-quality plaster.
-
The next process is "calcination," where the mined limestone is burned in a kiln. The lime used for plaster is made using a traditional method called "salt roasting." By placing limestone, coke, and a small amount of salt in the furnace and continuing to heat it for 3-4 days, the crystals of quicklime grow, and the impurities in the limestone vaporize, resulting in high-quality lime that becomes a stronger and whiter base for plaster.
-
Currently, only a few companies nationwide are producing lime by roasting it with salt. The traditional method, which has been passed down since the Edo period, is upheld by the strong will of the craftsmen.
