SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3D printing is a 3D printing technology that differs from other manufacturing methods in that it is used for batch production of multiple varieties or dozens of the same item. While SLS has the advantage of efficiently manufacturing high-strength and durable functional parts, traditional SLS faced challenges such as powder scattering and the high cost of equipment, which can exceed tens of millions of yen. To overcome these challenges associated with traditional SLS, Formlabs developed the Fuse series, a compact benchtop system that is easy for anyone to operate. It features a dedicated post-processing machine equipped with a negative pressure system to address powder scattering, and it has been redesigned to provide a consistent and simple workflow from printing to post-processing, all at a significantly lower cost. In just one year since its launch, the Fuse 1 has captured the number one market share in North America's SLS market. It is now available as the Fuse 1+ 30W, which is equipped with a 30W laser that doubles the printing speed, and new materials are continuously being developed and released. With the expanded capabilities of additive manufacturing, design philosophies are changing, the concepts of prototyping and validation are evolving, and manufacturing is beginning to step into a new stage.
