Vibration Control Device TMD [Example] Vibration Control Measures for Horizontal Vibration of the Pencil Building
Reduce the vibration acceleration level at the building's natural frequency to 1/2 or less! Examples of measures against perceptible vibrations caused by wind.
We would like to introduce a case study of vibration control measures for the Pencil Building's horizontal vibrations. In a newly constructed office building, perceptible vibrations due to wind sway were occurring. As a countermeasure, a TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) was installed on the rooftop to reduce the lateral sway of the building. By installing the TMD, the vibration acceleration level at the building's natural frequency was reduced by more than 6 dB (to less than half) in both the X and Y directions. Additionally, the building's damping ratio improved from 1% to 12%, significantly shortening the time it takes for vibrations to settle.
