The Pelican Chair is a work designed by Finn Juhl when he was 25 years old in 1940. At the time of its release, it was referred to by a furniture number, but it was named "Pelican Chair" because its shape resembles a pelican spreading its wings. It features a unique form that envelops the sitter with its arms. The seat has a firm cushion, allowing for a slightly reclined position that provides a moment of relaxation and comfort. His works, created without the technical skills of a furniture maker and as an architect, were sometimes harshly criticized at the time for their structure that ignored ergonomics and their unique design. However, the aesthetic sense he cultivated from a young age by viewing artworks and the incorporation of excellent sculptural forms into his designs gradually began to be appreciated, earning him the title of "furniture sculptor." He is also said to be one of the individuals who introduced Danish furniture to the world.
