A through hole is being processed in a certain PET bottle with a thickness of 270μm, aiming for an entrance diameter of Φ100μm.
Since the bottle itself is being processed, the diameter on the outlet side cannot be measured. However, based on prior condition checks, a reverse taper hole has been created where the outlet side is wider than the inlet side, and efforts have been made to ensure that the visible hole diameter from the outside is the minimum diameter. Additionally, processing has been carried out on the outer peripheral area, referencing the actual leak testing machine, to be confirmed during visual inspection.

basic information
Polyethylene terephthalate has excellent heat resistance, but when used in PET bottles, its heat resistance decreases. Even with ultra-short pulse laser processing, which has minimal thermal impact, the processing was challenging. In this experiment, the processing personnel repeatedly tried different approaches and succeeded in creating clean holes with burr-free edges. Depending on the PET bottle, there may be various factors that affect processability, such as thickness, material composition, and slight variations in thickness due to production lots. While condition verification and trial and error are necessary, reverse taper holes created by ultra-short pulse laser processing, which does not depend on the material, can achieve stable pseudo pinhole processing. Of course, we also accommodate hole processing for high-precision PET and resin products.
