This is a device that synthesizes and displays LCD (liquid crystal) images and actual gimmick images using a half mirror. Normally, it shows the LCD screen, but in the next stage, the LCD is stored inside, and the half mirror comes out instead. It is a presentation device that synthesizes and displays two elements—the gimmick in the back and the LCD image—on the swapped half mirror. Complex movements are performed using a single large cam gear. ◆Background of Introduction Images displayed on LCDs (liquid crystal displays), no matter how three-dimensional they are, end up appearing flat, lacking depth perception. Therefore, there has been a demand for display devices that can convey a greater sense of three-dimensionality and presence. ◆Solution By showing a three-dimensional object (gimmick) separately from the LCD, we can convey the actual three-dimensionality to the user. Additionally, we use a half-mirror to combine two images for display. To replace the large LCD with the half-mirror, the LCD is rotated and stored at the top. Next, the half-mirror is advanced from the back, and the gimmick at the farthest point is also made movable. These actions and the detection by sensors are managed by a pair of large cam gears placed on both sides of the housing. By providing multiple cam grooves and cam peaks, it operates with just one motor. ◆Effect Since we can display three images—the LCD image, the three-dimensional gimmick, and the composite image of the half-mirror—it has become possible to create a more immersive presentation. In terms of the mechanism, consolidating multiple actions into a single cam gear has allowed for a reduction in the number of parts. At the same time, it has made it possible to use a large LCD compared to the size of the housing.
