The frame is a simple structure that consists of four stainless steel pipes welded together at only three points, with a molded plywood back and seat formed by a three-dimensional curved surface, bolted together with rubber mounts in between. Instead of integrating the back and seat into a single molded piece, it is intentionally designed as two separate parts to allow the rubber mounts to effectively absorb loads and impacts. The product was first commercialized by Evans Products Company, where Charles Eames was employed at the time. Due to the organic shape of the curves in the back and seat, it has been nicknamed "the potato chip chair." It is not an exaggeration to say that the achievements of Charles and Ray Eames began with the material of molded plywood, and the development of products that could be produced cheaply and in large quantities was the concept behind it.
