This is a case study of hypoid gears for automatic tool changers (ATC) used in machine tools. The size is φ400, made of SCM, and it has undergone carburizing and quenching as heat treatment. In this case, hypoid gears were adopted to compact the gearbox. While hypoid gears are similar to worm gears, they have a higher engagement ratio and better power transmission efficiency, which are notable advantages. By using hypoid gears, we were able to design a larger reduction ratio for the ATC, making it possible to achieve a single-stage reduction instead of the previous two-stage reduction. Furthermore, we provided optimal specifications for the machine's performance through strength calculations during load operation. As a result, the product's quietness and durability were improved.
