Technologies utilizing trivalent and hexavalent chromium.
If you are involved in surface treatment, the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "chromium" is likely hexavalent chromium compounds. Hexavalent chromium compounds are regulated substances under the RoHS Directive and REACH regulation for SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern), so many of you may be familiar with them from product substance investigation lists. On the other hand, the chromium used in surface treatment is not limited to hexavalent chromium compounds. Chromium nitrate and chromium chloride are classified as trivalent chromium compounds. Metallic chromium is zero-valent chromium, which is relatively gentle on the human body and less likely to cause metal allergies. While trivalent chromium compounds are chemical substances and are not inherently safe, if they come into contact with the skin, washing them off immediately will not cause ulcers, and they are not listed as carcinogenic substances. The issue lies with hexavalent chromium compounds, which can cause lung damage if inhaled, gastrointestinal issues if ingested, and are considered carcinogenic. basic information
Chrome plating - Chrome plating using hexavalent chromium compounds = Hexavalent chromium compound-free (compliant with RoHS directive = acceptable) This chrome plating reduces hexavalent chromium compounds to zero-valent metal for deposition, so the plating film does not contain hexavalent chromium compounds. Trivalent chrome plating - Chrome plating using trivalent chromium compounds = Hexavalent chromium compound-free (compliant with RoHS directive = acceptable) Chrome plating using trivalent chromium compounds such as chromium chloride or chromium sulfate also reduces trivalent chromium compounds to zero-valent for deposition, so the plating film is made of chromium metal and does not contain either trivalent or hexavalent chromium compounds. Hexavalent chromium chromate - Hexavalent chromium chromate (conversion coating applied over zinc plating or aluminum) = Contains hexavalent chromium compounds (compliant with RoHS directive = not acceptable) The chromate coating, which is a conversion treatment using hexavalent chromium compounds, generates a film containing hexavalent chromium compounds on the surface of zinc or aluminum to achieve corrosion resistance. This film contains hexavalent chromium compounds. → Silvec does not handle hexavalent chromium chromate.
