Technical Information Magazine 201908-01 Sulfur Crosslinking Decomposition Method for Vulcanized Rubber
The technical information magazine The TRC News provides the latest information on analytical techniques that are useful for research and development, solving production troubles, and quality control.
**Abstract** Vulcanized rubber (natural rubber: NR, styrene-butadiene rubber: SBR, etc.) has been difficult to analyze chemically due to its insolubility in solvents. Therefore, by introducing a technique to cleave the sulfur cross-links that cause this insolubility and solubilize the rubber components, it has become possible to apply solution NMR and GPC, which are essential for structural analysis and physical property measurement of high molecular weight substances that were previously unattainable. This allows for more detailed analytical evaluations when combined with conventional methods. This paper presents examples of structural analysis and degradation analysis of vulcanized natural rubber. **Table of Contents** 1. Introduction 2. Cleavage of Sulfur Cross-links 3. Analysis of Vulcanized Natural Rubber 4. Application to Degradation Analysis 5. Conclusion
